Calciopoli: the black page of the italian football

On 8 November 2011 there was the sentence about Calciopoli: the scandal that involved the first italian football league in 2006. Luciano Moggi (ex director of Juventus), Andrea and Diego Della Valle (Fiorentina), Claudio Lotito (Lazio), Massimo De Santis and other 11 people were sentenced.

In May 2006, following a series of telephone tapping,a network involving some top-teams and the referre organizations was discovered by Italian police . Managers of these teams have been accused of choosing referees for matches, and get favors from them as a result of favors or threats.italian facts soccer ball

Punishments of the football league were:

  • Juventus : relegated in the secon division with 9 points of penalization, excluded of Champions League 2006/2007 and revocation of two Italian titles.
  • AC Milan : 8 points of penalization and excluded of Champions League 2006/2007
  • SS Lazio : 3 points of penalization and excluded of UEFA cup 2006/2007
  • Reggina : 11 points of penalization
  • Fiorentina : 15 points of penalization

After the sports justice, even the ordinary is coming to decisions. Luciano Moggi (banned from football at any level) was sentenced to 5 years and 8 months of imprisonment for criminal association by the court of Naples, the city where the trial was held. Andrea and Diego della Valle were sentenced to one year and three months for financial crimes and Claudio Lotito was sentenced to a year for two games he have distorted (Chievo-Lazio and Lazio-Parma).

These are the penalties that were imposed in the first instance (the Italian law has three levels of judgment), which confirmed what had been proposed by the sports justice, namely the existence of a dense network of contacts between the teams and the referee’s category, with the task of promoting the victory of some teams than others.
